Huawei Mate 9 Review

This Full HD phablet’s 5.9-inch display and 16-hour battery life make it ripe for using as a productivity tool – and US users also get Amazon Alexa built-in

A massive phone is a great way to beat the gadget ban on some airlines, but the Huawei’s latest is about more than just screen real estate.

The big news is that Amazon’s voice assistant Alex is built-in into it – at least, in the US – making it one of the first non-Amazon devices to have the artificial intelligence tech.

A 5.9-inch, Full HD Android phone with a metal uni-body design, it’s got a huge battery life (a stunning 16 hours!), a super-powerful processor, and a fingerprint sensor its rear. It claims that a 20-minute charge will give it enough battery charge for a whole day of use.

It also has a unique Machine Learning Algorithm that enables the phone to get faster the longer you use it – now that’s a novel idea! Its makers claim its can achieve a stunning 50% improvement in system response times.

However, what’s really exciting in the Mate 9’s Leica camera, a dual-lens affair with a 12 megapixel sensor for colour, and a 20 megapixel sensor for black and white. Thankfully it has a 3.5mm headphone jack built-in … unlike those pesky Apple iPhone 7’s.

It all fits into a 157x79x7.9mm package, despite having 64GB internal storage (though it goes right up to 256GB if you want to insert your own microSD cards).
